I’m Bridget, a self-taught sewist and maker based in sunny Florida.
I started sewing six years ago after my boyfriend moved from Florida to D.C., leaving me behind to finish my Ph.D. coursework. My studies were all-consuming and, before he moved, spending time with him was my way to de-stress and recharge. Once he left, I started working 24/7. In a few weeks, I realized this was not productive. Exhausted and lonely, I searched for a way to unwind.
I decided to try my hand at sewing. I’d always been interested in sewing, so I purchased a basic sewing machine at my local Joann’s and scoured the internet for how-to videos. I stumbled upon the Sewing with Knits class on Craftsy and worked through every lesson. By the end of the class, I knew how to work my machine and had made a few t-shirts. Despite wonky seams and stretched out hems, I loved the garments I’d made and was totally hooked.
My boyfriend eventually became my husband and is now my main sewing-enabler. I currently sew on a Janome DC2012 (regular sewing machine) and Juki MO 654DE (serger), both gifts from my husband.
Sewing now fills my free time, helps me relax, and makes me feel like Superwoman. I. CAN. MAKE. THINGS. It’s pretty awesome.
Once I found sewing, I also found a talented and incredibly supportive online sewing community. Engaging with others who sew or are interested in sewing is a lovely and unexpected part of my hobby… errr…. obsession. This little spot on the internet is my attempt to contribute and participate in this community.
New to sewing? An old pro? Welcome and happy sewing!
