In winter 2017, my lingerie drawer was beige. So beige.
I love color. I am not afraid of a bold red lip or bright pink skirt. Growing up in Florida, I learned to embrace a colorful wardrobe and I still gravitate towards bold colors and prints. My lingerie did not reflect my personal style. It was sooo boring! I decided I needed to liven up my underthings.
As a devout sewist, I thought, “I can sew fabulous lingerie, right?” I searched online for resources, but they were limited and difficult to locate. When I did find sites that offered resources, I felt intimidated by images of impossibly delicate makes and was confused by some of the verbage. Power mesh? FOE? It was another language… I didn’t know where to start.
Luckily, one of my local sewing shops offered a weekend workshop with Norma, the bra-making genius behind Orange Lingerie, and I signed up right away. The workshop opened my eyes to lingerie making. Sure, it took a little practice, but it wasn’t any harder than trying to fit a tailored dress. With Norma’s support, I sewed a decent bra muslin and gained the tools I needed to perfect its fit. My third bra fit like a glove and I was officially addicted to lingerie sewing.
Although, this website began as my attempt to demystify the lingerie sewing process for other home sewists, it has expanded to include self-sewn luxury of all sorts- dresses, blouses, skirts, pants, children’s clothing, etc.
